YouTube was created in early 2005 by Chad Hurley, Steve Chen, and Jawed Karim, three former employees of the online payments company PayPal. The domain “YouTube.com” was registered on February 14, 2005, and the founders began developing a platform that allowed ordinary users to upload, share, and stream video clips through a web browser without specialized software. The first video, a 19-second clip titled “Me at the zoo,” was uploaded by Jawed Karim on April 23, 2005.
The site operated as a public beta beginning in May 2005 before its broader official launch in November and December of that year. Early growth was rapid as users embraced the simple interface for sharing personal videos, music clips, and other content. To support the surging demand on its servers and bandwidth, the company secured venture funding led by Sequoia Capital, which invested several million dollars in 2005.
By 2006, YouTube was serving tens of millions of video views per day and had become one of the fastest-growing sites on the web. In October 2006, Google announced its acquisition of YouTube for $1.65 billion in stock, completing the deal later that year and integrating the platform into its expanding online services.
