Summary

James Cameron’s science fiction epic Avatar received its wide theatrical release on December 18, 2009, following a world premiere at the Odeon Leicester Square in London on December 10. The film had been in development since 1994, when Cameron wrote an initial 80-page treatment, but production was repeatedly delayed because Cameron determined that the necessary visual effects technology did not yet exist to realize his vision. Principal photography began in 2007 using a proprietary Fusion Camera System that Cameron co-developed with cinematographer Vince Pace, enabling stereoscopic 3D capture with dual high-definition cameras.

Set on the moon Pandora in the 22nd century, the film follows a paralyzed ex-Marine (Sam Worthington) who, via a genetically engineered avatar body, infiltrates the indigenous Na’vi population, ultimately joining their resistance against a mining corporation’s attempt to displace them. The story drew on established genres — the frontier narrative, the ecological fable, and the colonial critique — while presenting them through a photorealistic computer-generated environment. Approximately 60 percent of the film was computer-generated imagery; the remaining 40 percent was live action, composited together using newly developed pipeline software. Weta Digital employed approximately 900 people at peak production; the rendering infrastructure required a 930-square-metre server farm running 4,000 HP servers.

Avatar opened to $77 million domestically in its first weekend — the second-largest December opening ever recorded — and sustained exceptional momentum. It became the first film to gross $1 billion worldwide (reaching that milestone in 17 days), the first to cross $2 billion (in 45 days), and ultimately grossed approximately $2.924 billion globally, surpassing Cameron’s own Titanic (1997) to become the highest-grossing film in cinema history at that time. The film held the number-one domestic box office position for seven consecutive weeks.

At the 82nd Academy Awards, Avatar received nine nominations and won three: Best Cinematography, Best Art Direction, and Best Visual Effects. It won Best Motion Picture — Drama and Best Director at the Golden Globe Awards.

Significance

Avatar had a transformative effect on the film industry in two principal areas: 3D exhibition technology and the commercial scale of visual-effects-driven blockbusters.

Before Avatar, 3D cinema had existed in various forms for decades but had not achieved sustained mainstream adoption. The film’s enormous commercial success — a substantial share of which came from premium 3D ticket surcharges — demonstrated to studios and exhibitors that audiences would reliably pay more for the 3D format. In 2009 alone, 3D films collectively accumulated $1.3 billion in ticket sales, a threefold increase from 2008. The result was a rapid industry-wide expansion of 3D screens and a multi-year wave of films released in the format, though a parallel backlash eventually arose against poorly executed conversions.

More broadly, Avatar redefined the financial ceiling for a theatrical release and reinforced the studio logic that a single blockbuster with mass global appeal could generate returns that justified enormous production and marketing investments. It also sparked critical discussion about the film’s narrative — its depiction of indigenous resistance filtered through a white protagonist was analyzed as a “white savior” narrative by cultural critics — ensuring that the film entered academic and popular discourse beyond box office figures alone.

The film’s box office record stood until 2019, when Avengers: Endgame briefly surpassed it; a 2022 re-release of Avatar ultimately restored it to the top position. Its sequel, Avatar: The Way of Water, was released in December 2022.
