Summary

Captain James Cook’s third and final Pacific expedition departed Plymouth, England, on July 12, 1776, aboard two Royal Navy vessels: HMS Resolution, commanded by Cook, and HMS Discovery, under Captain Charles Clerke. Resolution carried a crew of approximately 112, while Discovery carried 70. The voyage had been authorized by the British Admiralty with two stated purposes: to return Omai, a young man from the Society Islands who had traveled to England during the second voyage, to his home in the Pacific; and, under secret orders that Cook was not permitted to open until reaching Tahiti, to search for a navigable Northwest Passage connecting the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans through the waters north of the American continent. The Admiralty offered a prize of £20,000 for the discovery of such a route.

Cook had initially considered a consulting role for the new expedition but declared himself willing to lead it personally. The crew included several individuals who would later become notable in their own right. William Bligh served as master of HMS Resolution, gaining navigational experience that he would draw on during later commands including HMS Bounty. John Webber, a Swiss-born artist then 24 years old, was appointed official voyage artist on the recommendation of botanist Daniel Solander and joined Resolution at Plymouth the week before departure. William Bayly served as astronomer aboard Discovery, carrying out systematic celestial observations to determine longitude. The voyage also carried Kendall’s K1 chronometer, a copy of John Harrison’s famous H4 marine timekeeper, which Cook had used on his second voyage and which proved highly reliable for longitude determination even under varying temperature conditions.

From Plymouth, the ships sailed via Tenerife to the Cape of Good Hope, where they resupplied. They then proceeded eastward across the southern Indian Ocean to New Zealand, arriving at Ship Cove in Queen Charlotte Sound in February 1777. There Bayly, Cook, and King conducted systematic lunar distance observations and solar altitude measurements, supplemented by K1 readings, establishing precise longitude and contributing data to the Board of Longitude’s ongoing effort to improve maritime navigation. Webber produced paintings of the observation tents at Ship Cove, creating visual records of the scientific work. After leaving New Zealand the expedition continued north through the Pacific, reaching Tahiti and the Society Islands where Omai was returned to his homeland, before proceeding north toward North America. The ships reached the Hawaiian Islands in January 1778, becoming the first Europeans to make documented contact with the archipelago.

The Northwest Passage objective was pursued in 1778, when Cook sailed north along the Pacific coast of North America, transiting the Bering Strait and probing the Arctic Ocean before ice blocked further progress. Cook was killed in a violent dispute with Hawaiians at Kealakekua Bay on February 14, 1779. Command passed to Clerke, who made a second Arctic attempt, and then to John Gore, who brought the ships home to the Nore on October 4, 1780. The official account of the voyage, edited by Cook and James King and published in 1784, documented discoveries across the Pacific and Arctic.

Significance

Cook’s third voyage extended European geographic and scientific knowledge across the Pacific and into the Arctic, providing the most comprehensive charting of the Pacific coastline of North America attempted to that time. The discovery of the Hawaiian Islands opened a significant chapter in Pacific history. The precise navigational methods employed — combining lunar distance observations with the K1 chronometer — validated Harrison’s longitude solution and contributed directly to the adoption of marine chronometers as standard naval instruments in subsequent decades. William Bligh’s experience on the voyage shaped his later career, and John Webber’s visual documentation of Pacific peoples and landscapes became a primary source for 18th-century European knowledge of the region. The expedition’s failure to find the Northwest Passage definitively closed that avenue of exploration for a generation, redirecting later Arctic efforts overland.
