Banks was born on February 13, 1743, in Lincolnshire to a wealthy landed family. His father, William Banks, owned extensive estates. At age 21, Joseph inherited Revesby Abbey—one of England’s great estates—and an annual income of approximately £6,000, making him one of England’s wealthiest men and freeing him to pursue science as a gentleman-patron. He credited his first interest in botany to the wildflowers near Eton, where he was educated.

The Cook Voyage (1768–1771)
In 1768, at age 25, Banks joined Captain James Cook’s first expedition aboard the HMS Endeavour as a naturalist and gentleman scientist. He brought with him a small team of specialists: Daniel Solander and Herman Spöring (fellow naturalists), the artists Alexander Buchan and Sydney Parkinson, and several servants. Over three years, the expedition visited Brazil, Tahiti, the New Zealand coast, and the eastern coast of Australia—territories unmapped by European science. Banks’s team accumulated approximately 30,000 plant specimens and documented roughly 1,400 plant species previously unknown to Europeans. The return voyage made Banks an international scientific celebrity and established him as the era’s preeminent collector of exotic natural knowledge.

Banks in 1778: A Pivotal Year
Beyond his election to the Royal Society presidency on November 30, 1778, the year marked a convergence of Banks’s scientific and political influence. Captain Cook’s third Pacific voyage (1776–1779) was underway, and Banks—though he had declined to sail on the third voyage himself due to a dispute with the Admiralty over cabin arrangements—maintained active contact with Cook’s naturalists and monitored the expedition’s progress. Cook would be killed in Hawaii on February 14, 1779, but in 1778 he was still alive and exploring the Pacific Northwest, and Banks was positioning himself to process the expedition’s botanical and zoological collections upon their return.

In 1778, Banks also deepened his relationship with the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew, working with director William Aiton to expand the gardens’ collection of specimens from collectors worldwide. Francis Masson, the first official plant collector dispatched from Kew (at Banks’s instigation), had completed his landmark South Africa expedition (1772–1774) and was preparing further travels; Banks coordinated his assignment to Madeira and the Canary Islands. The year also saw Banks maintaining remarkable scientific correspondence across the front lines of war: he continued exchanging letters with French naturalists despite the Anglo-French war that Britain declared in March 1778, and corresponded with American scientists including Philadelphia’s American Philosophical Society, of which he was a foreign member. The total solar eclipse of June 24, 1778—recorded in North America and seen as a partial eclipse across Europe—engaged the kind of coordinated observational network the Royal Society had long fostered. Royal Society Presidency (1778–1820)
On November 30, 1778, Banks succeeded Sir John Pringle as President of the Royal Society at age 35. He held the position for 41 years until his death in 1820, making him the longest-serving president in the Society’s history. During his tenure, he:

It functioned as an unofficial national botanical archive, open to visiting naturalists and correspondents. Banks employed Daniel Solander as librarian and curator, managing a circulation of specimens, drawings, and letters that networked Banks to naturalists across Europe and the Americas. His library, accumulated over decades, contained thousands of volumes and thousands of original botanical illustrations by Sydney Parkinson and others from the Endeavour voyage.

By 1778, Banks’s correspondence list included figures such as Carolus Linnaeus the Younger (son of the recently deceased Carl Linnaeus), French botanist Antoine Laurent de Jussieu, Swedish naturalist Daniel Solander, and American scientists in the American Philosophical Society. The war strained but did not sever these connections: Banks and Franklin, both members of the Royal Society and the American Philosophical Society, continued to regard each other as colleagues even as their governments fought.

Later Years and Legacy
Banks remained active in science and colonial policy until his death on June 19, 1820, at age 77. He was created a baronet in 1781, a recognition of his influence. His legacy includes the introduction of hundreds of plant species to European cultivation, the professionalization of botanical science through institutional networks, and the integration of natural history into the infrastructure of imperial expansion.
