Background: Cook’s Third Voyage
Mission and Departure
Cook’s third Pacific voyage (1776–1779) had a specific strategic purpose: to find the Northwest Passage from the Pacific side — a navigable sea route connecting the North Pacific Ocean to the North Atlantic through Arctic waters north of North America, which, if found, would dramatically shorten the trade route from Britain to East Asia. The Admiralty had tried to find this passage from the Atlantic side repeatedly without success and now directed Cook to approach from the west.
Cook departed Plymouth on July 12, 1776, with two ships. HMS Resolution (462 tons, crew of 112) was his flagship; HMS Discovery (298 tons, crew of 70) was commanded by Captain Charles Clerke. The expedition carried an extraordinary complement of scientific instruments, including chronometers by Kendall and Arnold for precise longitude measurement — a technology that had transformed navigation since Cook’s first voyage — as well as telescopes, barometers, and drafting equipment for cartography. William Anderson, Resolution’s surgeon and an accomplished naturalist, served as the expedition’s de facto scientist and diarist; his journal, alongside those of officers and David Samwell, constitute the primary record of the voyage’s natural history observations.
Route to Hawaii
After stopping at the Cape of Good Hope, Kerguelen Island, Van Diemen’s Land (Tasmania), New Zealand, and Tonga, Cook’s ships headed northeast across the Pacific. Cook had no specific expectation of finding a major island group at approximately 21° north latitude; the discovery of Hawaii was in this sense accidental — a product of the islands’ location along the sailing route Cook needed to reach the Pacific Northwest.
First Contact: January 1778
Sighting and Approach
Early on the morning of January 18, 1778, lookouts on HMS Resolution sighted a high island bearing northeast: Oahu. As the ships sailed closer, two additional high islands became visible — Kauai and Niihau. Cook recorded in his journal: “At this time we were in some doubt whether those were islands or the main land.” By the following morning the character of the landmass was clear. Cook shaped course for Kauai, the northernmost of the three visible islands.
On January 20, Resolution anchored in Waimea Bay, Kauai, in approximately 13 fathoms of water. Canoes immediately put out from shore carrying Hawaiian men, who were initially cautious but grew bolder when Cook’s crew showed no hostile intent. The Hawaiians had never encountered Europeans or metal; when Cook’s crew offered iron — nails, knives, and small tools — in exchange for food and water, Hawaiians responded eagerly. Anderson’s journal notes that the Hawaiian people initially prostrated themselves before Cook’s officers, a behavior that historians have interpreted as the performance of the prostration protocol (kapu) required in the presence of high-ranking ali’i (chiefs). Whether the Hawaiians initially regarded Cook as a supernatural being or simply as a high-ranking foreigner is a question that has generated substantial historical debate.
The Naming: Sandwich Islands
Cook named the archipelago the “Sandwich Islands” on January 18, 1778, recording the designation in his journal. The name honored John Montagu, 4th Earl of Sandwich, who as First Lord of the Admiralty from 1771 to 1782 had been instrumental in planning and funding Cook’s second and third voyages. Cook’s own name for the islands did not survive: after Hawaiian sovereignty was recognized and the islands were integrated into the United States in 1898, the indigenous name “Hawai’i” — used by the inhabitants for the entire archipelago as well as its largest island — replaced “Sandwich Islands” in standard usage.
Kauai and Niihau
Over approximately two weeks in late January to early February 1778, Cook’s ships anchored at Waimea, Kauai, and briefly at Niihau, the smallest inhabited island to the west. The exchanges during this period were extensive: Hawaiian men and women traded fresh provisions (pigs, yams, taro, and breadfruit) for iron and other metal goods. Anderson documented plant species, animal life (including Hawaiian geese and honeycreepers), and aspects of Hawaiian social organization. Cook noted the presence of a hierarchical society governed by a kapu system of ritual restrictions, which he observed but could not fully decode in the brief contact period.
Cook recorded with concern the likelihood that his crew had introduced venereal disease to the islands — a disease, he acknowledged, for which his expedition was responsible. His efforts to prevent infected sailors from going ashore had been ineffective, a pattern he had seen repeated across the Pacific. This admission in his journal stands as one of the clearest Enlightenment-era acknowledgments of the destructive epidemiological consequences of European exploration.
The Voyage North: Pacific Coast Charting
After leaving Niihau on February 2, 1778, Cook sailed north and northeast, eventually making landfall on the Pacific Northwest coast of North America at Cape Foulweather (present-day Oregon) on March 7, 1778. Over the following months, Cook charted the coastline from Oregon northward through present-day British Columbia, Alaska, and the Aleutian Islands, reaching the Bering Strait in August 1778. He pushed through the Strait into the Arctic Ocean but was turned back by pack ice at approximately 70° north latitude in August 1778, definitively demonstrating that the Northwest Passage, even if it existed, was not navigable in the 18th century. William Anderson died at sea off Alaska on August 3, 1778, depriving the expedition of its principal naturalist.
The season was too advanced and conditions too severe to attempt another passage north. Cook turned south, returning to winter in warmer waters. He had already identified the Hawaiian Islands as the logical wintering base.
Return to Hawaii: November 1778
The Big Island
Cook’s ships returned to Hawaiian waters in late November 1778, this time approaching from the north and encountering the Big Island of Hawai’i — a significantly larger and more populous island than Kauai. The ships spent weeks sailing around the Big Island, making contact at various anchorages and gathering provisions while Cook searched for a suitable harbor. This extended period allowed for the most intensive documentation of Hawaiian society yet achieved.
The scale of the Hawaiian population became apparent: Cook estimated tens of thousands of people inhabited the Big Island alone, governed by paramount chief Kalani’ōpu’u, who was engaged in a war with the chiefs of Maui during this period. The Big Island’s population and hierarchical complexity exceeded anything Cook had encountered elsewhere in Polynesia.
Kealakekua Bay
On January 17, 1779, Resolution and Discovery entered Kealakekua Bay on the western (Kona) coast of the Big Island. The arrival coincided with the Makahiki festival, an annual period of peace and celebration associated with the god Lono, whose symbol was a crosspiece draped with white kapa cloth — a form that Cook’s ships, with their masts and sails, may have resembled. Cook was received with extraordinary ceremony, including the prostration ritual performed before high-status ali’i, and was treated as an honored guest if not as the deity Lono himself. Kalani’ōpu’u received Cook formally and exchanged gifts.
Cook’s Death: February 14, 1779
After departing Kealakekua Bay on February 4, 1779, Resolution suffered a broken foremast in a storm and the ships returned to the bay for repairs. The second arrival had a different character: the Makahiki festival had ended, and the cultural context for Cook’s earlier reception no longer applied. Tensions grew over theft of iron from the ships. On February 13, a Discovery cutter (a small boat) was stolen from the shore. Cook attempted to lure Kalani’ōpu’u aboard Resolution as a hostage to secure the cutter’s return — a tactic he had used successfully elsewhere in the Pacific. A crowd gathered; news arrived that a chief had been killed in a separate confrontation; the situation escalated. Cook and a small group of marines were surrounded on the beach, and Cook was killed in the melee on February 14, 1779. Four marines also died. Captain Clerke assumed command, negotiated the return of some of Cook’s remains, and led the expedition home; Clerke himself died of tuberculosis on the return voyage in August 1779.

Scientific Contributions
Cook’s encounter with Hawaii produced the first systematic European documentation of Hawaiian geography, natural history, and culture. The published account of the third voyage — edited by Captain James King and published in 1784 as A Voyage to the Pacific Ocean — became an immediate bestseller and shaped European understanding of the Pacific for decades. Its maps of the Hawaiian Islands, the Pacific Northwest coast, and the Bering Strait remained authoritative for a generation.
Epidemiological Consequences
The most destructive legacy of Cook’s arrival was biological. Hawaiian populations had no immunity to Eurasian diseases including measles, influenza, and sexually transmitted infections. Epidemiological estimates suggest that the Hawaiian population, perhaps 300,000 at the time of Cook’s arrival, declined by at least 50–80% over the following century. The introduction of disease was not deliberate — Cook himself recorded his unsuccessful attempts to prevent it — but it was devastating. By the time Hawaii was formally annexed by the United States in 1898, the indigenous Hawaiian population had fallen to approximately 40,000.
Commercial and Political Integration
Cook’s publication of the third voyage’s accounts brought Hawaiian resources to commercial attention. The Pacific fur trade, which Cook’s men had discovered was lucrative when they sold sea-otter pelts acquired in Alaska at Chinese ports in 1779–1780, drew European and American merchant ships to the North Pacific and to Hawaii as a provisioning stop. By the 1790s, Honolulu had become a regular port of call for ships trading between the Pacific Northwest and China. Kamehameha I, drawing on European trade goods (and European military advice), used this commercial integration to consolidate control over all the Hawaiian Islands by 1810, establishing the Kingdom of Hawaii that would persist until American annexation.
The Enlightenment Context
Cook’s discovery occurred within the broader Enlightenment project of systematic global knowledge. His three voyages (1768–1771, 1772–1775, 1776–1779) together mapped the bulk of the remaining unknown Pacific, charted New Zealand and eastern Australia, disproved the existence of a temperate southern continent, demonstrated the non-navigability of the Northwest Passage, and produced the first European scientific documentation of dozens of Pacific cultures. Hawaii was the capstone of this project — the final major inhabited archipelago to enter the European geographic record. The Royal Society, which had sponsored Cook’s first voyage, viewed his discoveries as the culmination of a generation’s effort to complete the map of the inhabited world.
