Adele — 21

Key figures: Adele, Paul Epworth (producer), Rick Rubin (producer), Ryan Tedder (producer)

Summary

Adele released her second studio album, 21, on January 24, 2011 in Europe via XL Recordings, followed by a February 22, 2011 release in North America through Columbia Records. Named for the singer’s age during its writing and recording, the album was composed in the aftermath of a breakup and moves through stages of anger, heartbreak, loneliness, and eventual acceptance. 21 became a defining commercial and cultural phenomenon of the year, topping charts in more than thirty countries and emerging as the world’s best-selling album of both 2011 and 2012, a feat credited with helping revitalize a global recorded-music industry then in commercial decline.

Production and Themes

21 was produced by a team including Paul Epworth, Rick Rubin, Ryan Tedder, Jim Abbiss, Fraser T Smith, and Dan Wilson, blending pop, soul, and blues-influenced arrangements around Adele’s vocals. The record’s emotional arc — moving from bitterness and anger through loneliness and regret to acceptance — was drawn directly from a real relationship breakup Adele experienced before recording. Lead single “Rolling in the Deep,” released in November 2010, established the album’s blend of soulful defiance, while the piano ballad “Someone Like You,” released in January 2011, became one of the year’s most recognized songs. Later singles “Set Fire to the Rain” and “Rumour Has It” further extended the album’s chart run through the year.

Chart Records

21 set numerous chart records during 2011. In the United States, it spent 24 weeks at number one on the Billboard 200, the longest run atop that chart by any album since 1985 and the longest ever by a female solo artist. In the United Kingdom, it spent 23 weeks at number one on the UK Albums Chart, also a record for a solo female artist, and went on to become the best-selling album of the 21st century in the UK. By the end of 2011, “Rolling in the Deep” and “Someone Like You” had both topped singles charts internationally, giving Adele simultaneous dominance of album and singles charts — a rare feat.

Industry Impact and Recognition

21 sold over 31 million copies worldwide, making it one of the best-selling albums in history, at a time when overall recorded-music sales were declining industry-wide; its success was widely credited with demonstrating that album-format sales could still drive mass commercial success in the streaming-era transition. The album’s dominance carried into early 2012, when it won six Grammy Awards, including Album of the Year, Best Pop Vocal Album, and Record and Song of the Year for “Rolling in the Deep,” cementing 2011 as the year Adele became a global pop phenomenon.
