Summary

Apple announced the iPhone 5 on September 12, 2012, at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco and released it to the public on September 21, 2012. The device introduced major design and technological changes: a 4-inch Retina display (up from 3.5 inches on previous models), the Lightning connector replacing the 30-pin dock connector in use since the original iPod (2003), LTE cellular connectivity, Apple’s A6 processor chip, and an aluminum-and-glass body that was 18% thinner and 20% lighter than the iPhone 4S at 7.6 mm thin and 112 grams.

Pre-orders opened on September 14, 2012, and surpassed 2 million units within 24 hours — more than 20 times faster than the iPhone 4S’s opening day pre-orders. The iPhone 5 sold 5 million units in its opening weekend (September 21–23), exceeding the iPhone 4S’s record of 4 million. It shipped with iOS 6 at price points of $199 (16 GB), $299 (32 GB), and $399 (64 GB) with a carrier contract.

Design and Hardware

The iPhone 5 marked Apple’s most significant industrial redesign since the iPhone 4. The two-tone aluminum and glass construction gave the rear panel a distinctive look, with polished chamfered edges machined from the aluminum frame. The screen’s aspect ratio changed from 3:2 to a taller 16:9, enabling widescreen video without letterboxing for the first time on an iPhone.

The A6 chip — Apple’s first fully custom ARM-based processor design — delivered approximately double the CPU and graphics performance of the A5 while consuming less power. The iSight camera retained the 8-megapixel sensor from the 4S but added a faster f/2.4 aperture, a sapphire crystal lens cover, and improved low-light performance. FaceTime video calling was enabled over cellular networks for the first time (previously restricted to Wi-Fi).

The Lightning Connector

The most immediately contentious hardware change was the introduction of the Lightning connector, a compact 8-pin reversible connector replacing the 30-pin dock connector that had been standard across Apple’s iPod, iPhone, and iPad lineup since 2003. While the new connector offered faster data transfer, improved durability, and the convenience of reversible insertion, it immediately rendered hundreds of millions of existing accessories obsolete. Apple sold a $29 Lightning-to-30-pin adapter, but many third-party accessories — speaker docks, car mounts, and chargers — required replacement or separate adapters.

The Lightning connector would remain Apple’s standard connector for all iPhones through the iPhone 14 (2022), a decade-long period of standardization. The European Union’s 2022 Common Charger Directive subsequently required Apple to adopt USB-C for the iPhone 15 (2023).

Apple Maps Controversy

Perhaps the most damaging aspect of the iPhone 5 launch was the simultaneous release of Apple Maps as the default navigation application in iOS 6, replacing Google Maps. Apple had been developing its own mapping platform as a strategic move to reduce dependence on Google, but the product launched with significant inaccuracies: landmarks placed in wrong locations, transit directions absent in many major cities, 3D Flyover rendering defects, and routing errors that led users astray.

Public criticism was swift and widespread. On September 28, 2012, Tim Cook issued a rare public apology letter, stating: “We are extremely sorry for the frustration this has caused our customers and we are doing everything we can to make Maps better.” Cook recommended competitors’ mapping apps — including Google Maps, Bing, and Waze — as alternatives while Apple improved its own product. Scott Forstall, the SVP of iOS software who had overseen Maps, declined to sign the apology and was subsequently dismissed in a broader executive reorganization announced on October 29, 2012.

Sales Performance and Market Impact

The iPhone 5’s commercial performance set records across the Apple product line. Apple reported $54.5 billion in quarterly revenue for the fiscal first quarter of 2013 (the 13 weeks ending December 29, 2012, covering holiday iPhone 5 sales), with iPhone unit sales of 47.8 million — both company records at the time. The launch contributed to Apple reaching a closing market capitalization of about $658 billion on September 19, 2012 — at the time the highest valuation ever recorded by any publicly traded company, surpassing the roughly $619 billion peak Microsoft had set in December 1999. (The stock’s intraday high near $705 per share that month was frequently conflated with the company’s total market value.)

The device’s LTE capability drove rapid growth in mobile data consumption globally. Carriers including AT&T, Verizon, and T-Mobile in the US and counterparts internationally reported significant increases in average data usage per subscriber following the iPhone 5 launch. This shift reinforced the transition toward mobile-first digital consumption — including the kind of video streaming that enabled phenomena like the Gangnam Style viral moment and the rapid growth of Instagram after its Facebook acquisition.

Competitive Landscape

The iPhone 5 launched during an intensely competitive period in the smartphone market. Samsung’s Galaxy S III, released in May 2012, had introduced a 4.8-inch Super AMOLED display and expanded hardware specifications, establishing consumer expectations for larger screens. Apple’s choice of a 4-inch screen (rather than matching Samsung’s larger format) became a subject of debate that would recur until Apple released the larger iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus in September 2014.

Microsoft’s Windows 8, released on October 26, 2012, represented the other major competing computing platform shift of the year, attempting to unify PC and mobile interfaces — a strategy that contrasted sharply with Apple’s deliberate separation of iOS (mobile) and OS X (desktop).
