On December 14, 2012, at approximately 9:35 AM, Adam Lanza fatally shot his mother, Nancy Lanza (52), at their home in Newtown, Connecticut, before driving to Sandy Hook Elementary School. Lanza then forced his way through a locked glass entrance door at the school and entered the building armed with a Bushmaster XM-15 semi-automatic rifle loaded with 10 thirty-round magazines. In the hallway, he fatally shot Principal Dawn Hochsprung and school psychologist Mary Sherlach. He then entered two first-grade classrooms (Rooms 8 and 10) and systematically fired 154 rounds over less than five minutes, killing 20 children—all first-graders, ages 6–7 (12 girls and 8 boys)—and four additional teachers: Lauren Rousseau, Rachel D’Avino, Victoria Leigh Soto, and Anne Marie Murphy. One six-year-old girl survived by hiding beneath a desk and feigning death. Lanza shot himself in the head at 9:40:03 AM. Police arrived 9–10 minutes after the shooting began. The total death toll was 27 (including the shooter): 1 mother, 20 children, and 6 school staff members. This was the second-deadliest school shooting in U.S. history, after Virginia Tech in 2007.
