Summary

Red Bull Stratos was a high-altitude freefall project executed on October 14, 2012, by Austrian skydiver Felix Baumgartner over New Mexico, United States. The mission culminated a five-year, approximately $20 million development program to advance understanding of high-altitude bailout procedures and pressure suit performance for commercial spaceflight. On October 14, 2012, at 09:30 MDT, Baumgartner ascended approximately 39 kilometers (128,000 feet) in a helium-filled balloon-carried pressurised capsule, then exited the capsule to free fall through the stratosphere before deploying his parachute after approximately 4 minutes and 19 seconds.

The complete jump lasted roughly nine minutes and three seconds from exit to landing. The ascent occupied approximately two hours and thirty minutes, beginning at Roswell Air Center, Roswell, New Mexico. Baumgartner’s descent through the stratosphere—where ambient pressure falls to less than 1% of sea-level pressure and temperatures can reach −56 °C (−69 °F) — required a pressurized suit manufactured by ILC Dover, the same company that produces NASA’s Extra-Vehicular Activity (EVA) suits. Former U.S. Air Force Colonel Joseph Kittinger, who established the previous manned balloon altitude record of 31,300 metres (102,800 feet) in Project Excelsior on August 16, 1960, served as mission advisor and was the sole voice in Baumgartner’s earpiece during the ascent and jump.

The jump had been originally scheduled for October 9, 2012, but was postponed twice due to high winds that threatened the helium balloon before launch.

Technical Details

The Balloon and Capsule

The helium balloon was manufactured by Raven Aerostar and measured 834,497 cubic metres (29,470,000 cubic feet) when fully inflated at altitude—larger than the entire volume of the Empire State Building. The balloon’s polyethylene film was 0.0008 centimetres thick, thinner than a dry-cleaning bag. The pressurised capsule weighed approximately 1,315 kg (2,900 lb) and was designed to maintain an internal pressure equivalent to 15,000 feet, protecting Baumgartner even if his suit were compromised during ascent.

The Pressure Suit

ILC Dover’s full-pressure suit for the mission was a custom development, adapted from NASA EVA suit technology. The suit maintained a pressure of 3.5 psi, protecting Baumgartner from ebullism (boiling of body fluids) that would occur above the Armstrong line (~19 km). The suit included a parachute system, oxygen supply, communication equipment, and cameras. Total suit-and-parachute-system weight was approximately 130 kg (285 lb).

Data Collection

The mission gathered telemetry across multiple dimensions of critical interest to future aerospace medicine and commercial spaceflight emergency procedures. The data included body position during spin stabilisation, pressure suit performance under rapid decompression conditions, thermal gradients during high-speed descent, and the physiological effects of the speed of sound transition in free fall. Nine GoPro cameras were mounted on the capsule and Baumgartner’s suit, with live video transmitted to ground via satellite.

Records Established

Felix Baumgartner’s Red Bull Stratos jump established three world records verified and certified by the Fédération Aéronautique Internationale (FAI):

Most notably, Baumgartner became the first human being to break the sound barrier in free fall without vehicular power—a milestone that required overcoming physiological challenges including an uncontrolled flat spin that briefly put the mission at risk before Baumgartner stabilised himself manually. The previous high-altitude record held by Kittinger had stood for 52 years.

A fourth record—longest freefall time—was not broken because Baumgartner deployed his parachute sooner than Kittinger’s 1960 mission, which had used a drogue to slow the fall. Kittinger himself had held that record: 4 minutes and 36 seconds.

In October 2014, Google executive Alan Eustace conducted the GOOGLE StratEx project, ascending to 41,422 m (135,890 ft) and breaking Baumgartner’s altitude record; however, Baumgartner’s speed record (Mach 1.25) remains intact as of 2024.

Mission Team

The project assembled a cross-disciplinary team that operated over five years of development:

  • Art Thompson (Technical Project Director): Former Northrop Grumman engineer with experience on the B-2 Spirit stealth bomber, he designed the capsule and oversaw systems integration.
  • Jonathan Clark, MD (Medical Director): Former NASA flight surgeon and husband of Space Shuttle Columbia mission specialist Laurel Clark (who died in the 2003 disaster); his personal connection to spaceflight safety gave the mission particular emotional weight.
  • Mike Todd (Life Support Engineer): Managed ILC Dover suit development and integration.
  • Red Bull Mission Control: Operated from Roswell, with Austrian and American engineering leads coordinating capsule, balloon, and medical telemetry.

Digital and Media Impact

The Red Bull Stratos jump produced a significant digital milestone. The YouTube live stream of the event drew more than 8 million concurrent viewers at its peak—breaking the previous YouTube simultaneous live-streaming record. Over 40 broadcasters in 50 countries carried the jump live. Within 24 hours, the event generated approximately 30 million total online views. Red Bull’s YouTube channel gained over 100,000 subscribers on the day of the jump.

This digital distribution model—integrating extreme human-performance sports with live streaming—became a template for subsequent branded live events. Red Bull Stratos demonstrated that a scientific-athletic event could organically generate media reach equivalent to major broadcast sports events without traditional broadcasting infrastructure.

Significance

The scientific and engineering achievement resonated far beyond sport. Mission medical director Jonathan Clark emphasised that the project aimed to “improve the safety for space professionals as well as potential space tourists” by testing and validating evacuation procedures essential for future space tourism. Specifically, the mission produced aeronautical data on:

  1. Supersonic freefall physiology: Human body behaviour at speeds above Mach 1 outside a vehicle.
  2. Pressure suit performance: Real-world validation of suit integrity under conditions approaching vacuum.
  3. Flat-spin recovery: Baumgartner’s unassisted recovery from an unstable flat spin at ~26,000 m provided empirical data applicable to future EVA emergency procedures.
  4. High-altitude parachute deployment: Opening dynamics of conventional parachutes at extreme altitude and speed.

Red Bull Stratos’s October 2012 timing placed it in a year of remarkable human-spaceflight milestones: NASA’s Curiosity rover had landed on Mars on August 6, 2012, and the commercial spaceflight industry was accelerating under SpaceX’s Dragon capsule, which had completed its first berthing to the International Space Station in May 2012. Stratos contributed to that broader narrative of expanding human reach in the aerospace domain.
