The epicentre was located at approximately 34.493°N, 73.629°E — roughly 19 kilometres northeast of Muzaffarabad, the capital of Pakistan-administered Azad Kashmir, and about 90 kilometres north-northeast of Islamabad. The rupture occurred along the Main Boundary Thrust fault system, a seismically active convergence zone where the Indian Plate drives northward beneath the Eurasian Plate, building the Himalayas at a rate of approximately 40 millimetres per year.
Seismic Context
The region sits within one of the world’s most hazardous seismic zones; the area had experienced a comparable event in 1905 (the Kangra earthquake, magnitude ~7.8) that killed over 19,000. The 2005 rupture propagated predominantly northeast along a 70–80 km fault segment, releasing energy equivalent to roughly 1,000 Hiroshima atomic bombs. Aftershocks exceeding magnitude 6.0 continued for weeks and triggered additional landslides that complicated rescue operations.
Human Impact
The Pakistani government’s official death toll stood at approximately 87,350, with credible independent estimates placing the true total above 100,000. Around 138,000 people were injured and more than 3.5 million were left homeless across an area of approximately 30,000 square kilometres. In Pakistani-administered Azad Kashmir alone, an estimated 600,000 buildings were destroyed or severely damaged. Relief Operations
