PlayStation 3 and Nintendo Wii launches

Summary

In November 2006, two gaming consoles launched in North America within days of each other, defining the seventh generation of video game hardware and establishing competing visions for the future of interactive entertainment. The PlayStation 3 (PS3), released November 11, 2006 in Japan and November 17 in North America, represented Sony’s continued hardware dominance through processing power and advanced media technology. The Nintendo Wii, released November 19, 2006 in North America and December 2 in Japan, revolutionized gaming accessibility through intuitive motion-control technology, fundamentally shifting the industry’s approach to user interaction.

The PS3 featured the Cell Broadband Engine—a custom heterogeneous multi-core architecture co-developed with IBM and Toshiba—and adopted the Blu-ray optical disc format, positioning it as both a gaming device and premium home-entertainment system. Its launch lineup included titles such as Resistance: Fall of Man and Ridge Racer 7, emphasizing graphical capability and processing power.

The Wii, by contrast, prioritized accessibility and innovation in control design. Its primary input device was the Wii Remote, a Bluetooth motion-sensing controller using three-axis accelerometers and infrared positioning relative to a sensor bar placed near the television. This design radically reduced the learning curve for non-traditional gamers, broadening the console’s appeal across demographics. Wii Sports, bundled with every Wii unit sold in North America, became a cultural phenomenon and arguably the best-selling game on any platform to that point.

Launch Pricing and Availability

Sony launched the PS3 in two configurations: a 20 GB model priced at $499 and a 60 GB model at $599 in North America. The higher-end SKU included an HDMI port, Wi-Fi, and memory card readers absent from the base unit. Launch supply was severely constrained; Sony shipped approximately 197,000 units to North American retailers on November 17, 2006, prompting overnight queues and, in several incidents, armed robberies of waiting customers. The PS3’s European and Australian launch was delayed until March 23, 2007 due to Blu-ray component shortages.

Nintendo priced the Wii at $249.99 in North America—roughly half the cost of the entry-level PS3. Nintendo shipped approximately 600,000 units for the November 19 North American launch. Despite high initial demand, Wii supply remained constrained through most of 2007. The European launch followed on December 8, 2006, at €249.99.

Both consoles’ manufacturing economics were revealing: Sony reportedly spent approximately $840–$900 to manufacture each PS3 unit, selling the base model at a significant loss with the expectation of recouping costs through software licensing. Nintendo, following its traditional approach, manufactured the Wii profitably from the first unit shipped.

Technical Architecture

The PS3’s Cell Broadband Engine ran at 3.2 GHz and paired a primary PowerPC-based core (the PPE) with seven semi-autonomous Synergistic Processing Elements (SPEs) capable of parallel computation tasks. The graphics subsystem used Nvidia’s RSX Reality Synthesizer (derived from the G70 architecture) running at 550 MHz with 256 MB of dedicated GDDR3 memory; main system RAM comprised 256 MB of XDR DRAM. This architecture delivered raw performance substantially beyond its contemporaries but proved difficult to program; third-party developers frequently cited the Cell’s complexity as a barrier to multi-platform development.

The Wii’s hardware was deliberately modest by comparison. Its IBM Broadway processor ran at 729 MHz—an evolution of the GameCube’s Gekko—paired with an ATI Hollywood GPU at 243 MHz. Total system RAM was approximately 88 MB. The console’s differentiation came entirely from its Wii Remote controller: a wireless unit communicating via Bluetooth, containing a three-axis accelerometer and a separate infrared camera that tracked relative position against a pair of infrared emitters placed near the screen. An optional Nunchuk accessory added a second analog thumbstick and accelerometer. A secondary expansion port on the Wii Remote accepted further attachments, enabling accessories like the Wii Zapper and Wii MotionPlus (a gyroscopic enhancer released in 2009).

Online Ecosystems

Both systems launched with networked infrastructure as a first-class feature, marking a decisive shift from the largely optional online experiences of the sixth generation. Sony’s PlayStation Network (PSN) launched alongside the PS3, offering a digital game marketplace, multiplayer gaming, and a free online service in contrast to Microsoft’s subscription-based Xbox Live. The Wii Shop Channel allowed digital purchase of Wii-native titles and a “Virtual Console” service for emulated retro games from Nintendo, Sega, NEC, and other publishers—pioneering digital game distribution for Nintendo properties.

The move toward always-connected console architectures in November 2006 coincided with the broader transformation of the internet into a platform for user-generated content, social media, and streaming media, visible that same year in Twitter’s launch, YouTube’s acquisition by Google, and the naming of the web-connected public as Time magazine’s Person of the Year.

Significance

The console launch rivalry of November 2006 crystallized a fundamental strategic divergence in the gaming industry. Over their full lifecycle, the Wii sold approximately 101.63 million units globally versus the PS3’s 87.4 million, demonstrating the market power of accessibility and innovative interaction design over raw processing capability. The result upended conventional wisdom in hardware marketing, where higher specifications had long been the primary selling point.

The Wii’s motion controls generated immediate industry imitation: Microsoft’s Kinect (2010) and Sony’s PlayStation Move (2010) both represented direct responses to the Wii’s commercial success. The broader principle—that control paradigm innovation can outweigh technical specification—influenced interface design across consumer electronics well beyond gaming.

The PS3’s Blu-ray integration proved commercially decisive in a separate technology battle. Sony’s inclusion of a Blu-ray player in a mass-market $499 device significantly accelerated Blu-ray adoption and was widely credited as a factor in Toshiba’s decision to concede the format war by announcing the discontinuation of HD DVD in February 2008. However, the eventual triumph of digital distribution eroded the significance of that physical-format victory within a decade.

Both console launches also illustrate 2006’s positioning as a moment of inflection in digital infrastructure: the last hardware generation to treat optical disc as primary distribution, and the first to make online connectivity and digital storefronts core to the consumer proposition rather than add-on features.
